What You Need To Know To Make A Worm Garden

Worms might remind you of playing in the dirt as a kid or that special day you went fishing.

Today, I’m going to make a safe place for worms in my garden. Earthworms will help break up the soil and add nutrients to it.

Vermicompost is a healthy way to feed and fuel your soil, making it a strong base for your garden. Some people might say it’s when earthworms are used to turn organic waste into fertilizer. Vermicomposting is an example of how nature works.

How to Build a Worm Garden

First, let’s make a few holes in a five-gallon bucket. Put the holes in the container’s bottom and along the bottom half. Dig a hole in the ground as big as your bucket. Put the bucket in the hole, making sure to leave it about two inches above the ground.

Begin Putting different things in the bucket, like grass clippings, brown leaves, and food scraps. Add sand and black dirt by the handful as you build the layers.

When the bucket is almost full, it’s time to add the worms. Red wigglers are my favorite. You can find them in the sports section of your local Wal-Mart.

Layer more soil and organic matter on the bucket to fill it up.

Add water about once a week to keep the material wet.

As time goes on and the worm poop gets bigger, add food scraps and grass clippings to keep feeding the worms. You can either put the lid on the bucket or leave it open. A lid can help keep animals from getting in.

When you plant the worm garden again in the spring, you will have a full container of good fertilizer. Use the healthy compost to refresh the soil in your pots and around new trees and shrubs. The compost can be spread all over your vegetable garden. You can also mix the compost with 1 cup of water per gallon. Let it sit for 24 hours. This worm tea is good for all the plants in your house and garden.

Conclusion

In the garden, worms can be your best friends. Have fun watching them move around!
